Masters of Science in Industrial Engineering

Masters of Science in Industrial Engineering

What is Industrial Engineering?

Industrial engineering involves figuring out how to do things better by eliminating waste and determining the most effective ways to use the basic factors of production: people, machines, materials, information, and energy. Industrial engineers are concerned primarily with increasing productivity through the management of people, methods of business organization, and technology. Industrial engineers design manufacturing and information systems to meet those requirements with the help of mathematical methods and models in a bid to maximize efficiency. They develop management control systems that assist in financial planning and cost analysis; design production planning and control systems to ensure product quality and seamless integration along with process coordination. They determine the most efficient plant locations and design supply chain systems for distribution.

Is IE in demand?

Since they are not as specialized as other engineers, industrial engineers can be employed in a wide range of industries, including major manufacturing industries, hospitals and healthcare providers, consulting and engineering services, logistics companies. Demand for industrial engineers is projected to grow 10% from 2016 to 2026, faster than the average for all occupations. Many industrial engineers move into management positions because of the nature of work. Mean annual salary in USA is US$65000 -70000.

What do Industrial Engineers do?

Industrial engineers are involved in all stages of production and processing. They could design new facilities from scratch, or they may be responsible for upgrading, expanding or reconfiguring existing facilities. They could design new processes or design new tools and fixtures, or computer-aided process planning systems, quality management systems, inventory control systems. They analyze human reliability to assess work place safety, determine which types of jobs are most suitable for special populations like the elderly and the handicapped. In hospitals, they plan for scheduling cases to operating rooms in a hospital, determine the optimal routing of ambulances through a city.
